London Coffee Shop has higher prices for drinks to go than to drink on premise (see photo). Why is this so? Anyone have an answer

Why do you suppose this Coffee Shop in London prices the drinks where is cost MORE to get a drink to go than to drink it in the shop?  I honestly don't know...I am sure there is a Microeconomics lesson in here somewhere.

I am keepin the source a secret for now...

  1. This is very interesting because it sure doesn't make a lot sense in relation to the standardized prices we are used to in America. Maybe the vendor is simply trying to confuse people and con them into paying more for the coffee. It is crazy because the prices are not consistent. The price for a small to-go tea is 40 cents more than the on-site small tea but the regular size to-go is 10 cents less than the on-site regular size tea. My only guess is that the coffee shop managers either didn't go to school and have no education or they are brilliant because they use the price as a way to get you to talk about the store. Seems like it worked here.

  2. Honestly I'd have to say its the Jones effect. (A.K.A. Peer pressure), the more people drinking at the coffee house, the more it seems like the place is -really- good (thus the packed house.)

  3. The less expensive price for "out," seems to only apply to the small, otherwise it is less expensive for "in." Perhaps the more expensive price for "in" is to cover the cost of the facility. Maybe the small take out is the most popular size, so the price is higher.

  4. It could also be that the containers are different for either "out" or "in". Maybe an "in" drink is put in a mug that is later given back to the store to clean and reuse and the "out" drinks are put in disposable containers. If this is so, it could make sense because washing and reusing a mug is cheaper than buying more and more disposable plastic containers. Although the higher price for the small still doesn't make sense..

  5. Maybe it is more expensive to buy one to go because if you stay for a while there is a greater chance that you will finish that drink and want to buy another one. If you get it to go, no one ever comes back to buy another.

  6. Hahahaha maybe it's because staying in the shop is part of their propaganda. The longer one stays in the shop the more likely they will feel like buying something else there. It could also cost more for to-go cups if they use normal glasses for the people who sit down.

  8. Im finished LOL...drinks IN are usually more expensive than drinks OUT...Reason is simple when you drink IN you occupy a part of the coffee shop so you pay that little extra to cover building costs (as in rent , rates, electricity, heating, T.V...)
