Graphic showing the world largest employers...I think you will be as surprised by the names on this list as I was...
Walmart by far is the world's largest employer with a little over 2 million employees. Look at the names and country of origin for the rest of the top countries...Are you as surprised as I was?
Note: TESCO is a British Grocery chain...

I guess if I want a job I will either have to move to china or work at Walmart.
ReplyDeleteI'm not very surprised. According to Google China has a population of 1,331,460,000 (and that's 2009) with an unemployment rate of around 4.1% (http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2010-10/22/c_13570193.htm) meaning a very large work force. The US has a population of 307,006,550 with an unemployment rate of 9.2% (according to Google public data). Assuming that even only 1/4 of China is of age or is part of the work force that makes 332,865,000. Now if we take into account the unemployment rates. China has a viable workforce of 319,217,535 while the US only has 278,761,948 and that's assuming that everyone in the US works. It only makes sense that China (which in the last several decades has gone through a sort of industrial revolution and has left agriculture sector towards more technology based industries) is going to have companies that are the biggest employers.
ReplyDeleteWith the discussion we had in class regarding mail becoming obselete, it makes me wonder how long until the US Postal Service ceases to exist? 50 years? Possibly less? Hmmm.
